A multi-wavelenght study of cataclysmic variable stars.
This thesis investigates the properties of two cataclysmic variables which have previously been considered to be non-magnetic systems. The goal of this work is to constrain the component star masses and other physical parameters of these systems using multi-wavelength observations. I carry out spectroscopic studies on the eclipsing nova-like system RW Tri in the ultraviolet, far red, and near infrared. I produce a simple absorption model to show that one possible scenario for the origin of ultraviolet narrow absorption features, seen in Hubble Space Telescope observations, is a ring-like structure with height above the orbital plane, centred on the primary star. I re-analyse far red data from the Issac Newton Telescope, using the tomographic technique of 'skew-mapping' to obtain the radial velocity amplitude of the secondary star. I have made new observations of RW Tri in the near infrared using the United Kingdom, Infra-Red Telescope to determine the accuracy of the secondary star radial velocity amplitude. The measured secondary star radial velocity has been combined with ultraviolet absorption line analysis and existing optical emission line data, to calculate the mass ratio, and hence the mass of the component stars. The rotational velocity of the secondary star has also been obtained from the infrared observations, and combined with the radial velocity of the secondary star to calculate more reliable component star masses. OY Car, an eclipsing dwarf nova, was observed at X-ray wavelengths using XMM-Newton. I study the light curves, and measure the extent of the boundary layer in the system. I also observe significant quasi-sinusoidal variations with an underlying periodicity of 2233 seconds, which may be the spin period of the white dwarf primary star. These results imply that OY Car may be weakly magnetic, and could therefore belong to a new class of intermediate polars below the period gap. Agile Data Offloading over Novel Fog Computing Infrastructure for CAVs
Future Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) will be supervised by
cloud-based systems overseeing the overall security and orchestrating traffic
flows. Such systems rely on data collected from CAVs across the whole city
operational area. This paper develops a Fog Computing-based infrastructure for
future Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) enabling an agile and reliable
off-load of CAV data. Since CAVs are expected to generate large quantities of
data, it is not feasible to assume data off-loading to be completed while a CAV
is in the proximity of a single Road-Side Unit (RSU). CAVs are expected to be
in the range of an RSU only for a limited amount of time, necessitating data
reconciliation across different RSUs, if traditional approaches to data
off-load were to be used. To this end, this paper proposes an agile Fog
Computing infrastructure, which interconnects all the RSUs so that the data
reconciliation is solved efficiently as a by-product of deploying the Random
Linear Network Coding (RLNC) technique. Our numerical results confirm the
feasibility of our solution and show its effectiveness when operated in a

Health and wellbeing amongst older people research in Northamptonshire
The Ageing Research Centre of the University of Northampton (2014-current), in collaboration with the East Midlands Research into Ageing Network (EMRAN) is pleased to compile this brochure on research activity associated with older people across the county of Northamptonshire. This provides a comprehensive overview of activity that is relevant and of value to practice, identifying research outcomes that have real significance to age-related health and wellbeing. The brochure provides a summary of research activity over the last five years from academic, clinical and professional colleagues and demonstrates cross sector networks of collaboration around the common agenda of aging. Such collaboration will enhance the capacity of research understanding across the county and provide information and support for the needs of older people, their families and carers. The translation of research outcomes into practice is essential if we are to promote wellness, independence and healthy aging within the county and beyond and I would like to thank all contributors for their commitment and hard work in the production of this brochure
The Use of Decision–Analytic Models in Atopic Eczema: A Systematic Review and Critical Appraisal
Objective: The objective of this systematic review was to identify and assess the quality of published economic decision–analytic models within atopic eczema against best practice guidelines, with the intention of informing future decision–analytic models within this condition. Methods: A systematic search of the following online databases was performed: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, NHS Economic Evaluation Database, EconLit, Scopus, Health Technology Assessment, Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Registry and Web of Science. Papers were eligible for inclusion if they described a decision–analytic model evaluating both the costs and benefits associated with an intervention or prevention for atopic eczema. Data were extracted using a standardised form by two independent reviewers, whilst quality was assessed using the model-specific Philips criteria. Results: Twenty-four models were identified, evaluating either preventions (n = 12) or interventions (n = 12): 14 reported using a Markov modelling approach, four utilised decision trees and one a discrete event simulation, whilst five did not specify the approach. The majority, 22 studies, reported that the intervention was dominant or cost effective, given the assumptions and analytical perspective taken. Notably, the models tended to be short-term (16 used a time horizon of ≤1 year), often providing little justification for the limited time horizon chosen. The methodological and reporting quality of the studies was generally weak, with only seven studies fulfilling more than 50% of their applicable Philips criteria. Conclusions: This is the first systematic review of decision models in eczema. Whilst the majority of models reported favourable outcomes in terms of the cost effectiveness of the new intervention, the usefulness of these findings for decision-making is questionable. In particular, there is considerable scope for increasing the range of interventions evaluated, for improving modelling structures and reporting quality
Very Early Optical Afterglows of Gamma-Ray Bursts: Evidence for Relative Paucity of Detection
Very early observations with the Swift satellite of gamma-ray burst (GRB)
afterglows reveal that the optical component is not detected in a large number
of cases. This is in contrast to the bright optical flashes previously
discovered in some GRBs (e.g. GRB 990123 and GRB 021211). Comparisons of the
X-ray afterglow flux to the optical afterglow flux and prompt gamma-ray fluence
is used to quantify the seemingly deficient optical, and in some cases X-ray,
light at these early epochs. This comparison reveals that some of these bursts
appear to have higher than normal gamma-ray efficiencies. We discuss possible
mechanisms and their feasibility for explaining the apparent lack of early
optical emission. The mechanisms considered include: foreground extinction,
circumburst absorption, Ly-alpha blanketing and absorption due to high
redshift, low density environments, rapid temporal decay, and intrinsic
weakness of the reverse shock. Of these, foreground extinction, circumburst
absorption, and high redshift provide the best explanations for most of the
non-detections in our sample. There is tentative evidence of suppression of the
strong reverse shock emission. This could be because of a
Poynting-flux-dominated flow or a pure non-relativistic hydrodynamical reverse

Testing the Accuracy of Aerial Surveys for Large Mammals: An Experiment with African Savanna Elephants (Loxodonta africana)
Accurate counts of animals are critical for prioritizing conservation efforts. Past research, however, suggests that observers on aerial surveys may fail to detect all individuals of the target species present in the survey area. Such errors could bias population estimates low and confound trend estimation. We used two approaches to assess the accuracy of aerial surveys for African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) in northern Botswana. First, we used double-observer sampling, in which two observers make observations on the same herds, to estimate detectability of elephants and determine what variables affect it. Second, we compared total counts, a complete survey of the entire study area, against sample counts, in which only a portion of the study area is sampled. Total counts are often considered a complete census, so comparing total counts against sample counts can help to determine if sample counts are underestimating elephant numbers. We estimated that observers detected only 76% ± SE of 2% of elephant herds and 87 ± 1% of individual elephants present in survey strips. Detectability increased strongly with elephant herd size. Out of the four observers used in total, one observer had a lower detection probability than the other three, and detectability was higher in the rear row of seats than the front. The habitat immediately adjacent to animals also affected detectability, with detection more likely in more open habitats. Total counts were not statistically distinguishable from sample counts. Because, however, the double-observer samples revealed that observers missed 13% of elephants, we conclude that total counts may be undercounting elephants as well. These results suggest that elephant population estimates from both sample and total counts are biased low. Because factors such as observer and habitat affected detectability of elephants, comparisons of elephant populations across time or space may be confounded. We encourage survey teams to incorporate detectability analysis in all aerial surveys for mammals
Leaky doors: private captivity as a prominent source of bird introductions in Australia
The international pet trade is a major source of emerging invasive vertebrate species. We used online resources as a novel source of information for accidental bird escapes, and we investigated the factors that influence the frequency and distribution of bird escapes at a continental scale. We collected information on over 5,000 pet birds reported to be missing on animal websites during the last 15 years in Australia. We investigated whether variables linked to pet ownership successfully predicted bird escapes, and we assessed the potential distribution of these escapes. Most of the reported birds were parrots (> 90%), thus, we analysed factors associated with the frequency of parrot escapes. We found that bird escapes in Australia are much more frequent than previously acknowledged. Bird escapes were reported more frequently within, or around, large Australian capital cities. Socio-economic factors, such as the average personal income level of the community, and the level of human modification to the environment were the best predictors of bird escapes. Cheaper parrot species, Australian natives, and parrot species regarded as peaceful or playful were the most frequently reported escapees. Accidental introductions have been overlooked as an important source of animal incursions. Information on bird escapes is available online in many higher income countries and, in Australia, this is particularly apparent for parrot species. We believe that online resources may provide useful tools for passive surveillance for non-native pet species. Online surveillance will be particularly relevant for species that are highly reported, such as parrots, and species that are either valuable or highly commensal.Miquel Vall-llosera, Phillip Casse
